Painting without a plan #2

In my last blog entry I told you about the process of making a painting without a plan. I thought it was finished, but the thing has a mind of it's own. All I could do was listen en so I began working on it again. This is what it looked like 14 days ago:

And here's what it looks like now:

Morning, oils on panel, 90 x 120 cm

Spot the differences!

- I reworked the cloud at the horizon. I felt it needed more detail and the edge of the cloud repeated the contour of the dune, which started to annoy me. Softened the edge by adding a yellow glaze on top of the blue  bottom layer. Lightened up the cloud too.
- I felt the composition was out of balance. Too much happening on the left side, so I added a bunch of fluffy clouds on the right side which also put more emphasis on the composition's focal point, the tip of the dune.

Now that I see them together on the screen, I'm not sure if the changes are all for the better... I think the clouds on the right are an improvement. Don't know about the rest.

Let me know what you think!

  1. Beautiful and serene! The second one with the Addition of the clouds on the right definitely gives the painting more life, but if I may say so as a viewer, I'd probably have preferred a little less of them on the right just so that they don't dominate and take all the attention away from rest of the elements esp. the dune!

  2. Thanks for your comment Ash, much appreciated. I gotta say, I still don't know... When I read your comment I think: "Of course, she's right, it's too much", but the next moment I'm allright with it. The direction of the clouds is towards the dune, so that puts focus on the dune, but I wonder if that wouldn't have been the case with a little less clouds. Anyway, I decided to leave it like this. Next week the frame will be ready and I'll bring it to a gallery.

    1. The fact is whether there is an extra dusting of wayward clouds of not, the technique you use is so superior that they all look realistic and seem a part of sky as a whole & to any viewer it'll be a calm cohesive image. Hope a creative person gets to own this one. If it were me, sometimes I'd imagine myself walking on this beach and other times sitting/standing on the dune and looking up at the sky and so on .. Either way I doubt if the dunes will lack any attention!

    2. When I see a landscape painting (the good ones anyway) I always imagine stepping into the picture and walking through the landscape. Thanks for letting me know you had a similar experience with my painting!
